Choosing an MTB hub can be surprisingly complicated. DT Swiss, Hope, Industry Nine, Chris King, Shimano, OneUp, and many other manufacturers all approach the same basic task—transferring power from the cassette to the wheel—in very different ways.

Some focus on extremely fast engagement. Others prioritize durability, bearing life, easy servicing, low weight, or simplicity.

As a bicycle hub manufacturer ourselves, we think the interesting question isn’t simply which hub brand is best, but why different brands make different engineering choices.

Here is a closer look at some of the best-known names in the MTB hub industry—and how their designs reflect different priorities.

DT Swiss — The Ratchet Benchmark

DT Swiss is probably one of the most recognizable names in modern performance hubs.

One of its defining technologies is the Ratchet System, which replaces conventional individual pawls with two toothed ratchet rings that engage across a large contact area.

The concept has become popular because of its simplicity, reliability, and serviceability. Different DT Swiss hub families have evolved the design further, but the ratchet principle remains closely associated with the brand.

More importantly, DT Swiss helped prove that a ratchet drive system could become a mainstream solution for high-performance mountain bike hubs.

That influence can now be seen throughout the industry.

Hope — Built Around Durability and Serviceability

Hope has developed a particularly strong reputation among mountain bikers who value products that can be ridden hard and maintained for years.

Rather than chasing a single headline specification, Hope hubs have traditionally balanced durability, engagement, replaceable components, bearing accessibility, and a wide range of configurations.

That makes Hope an interesting example of another hub philosophy:

A good hub doesn’t necessarily need the most extreme specification—it needs to keep working.

For riders in wet, muddy, or demanding conditions, serviceability can be just as important as weight or engagement speed.

Industry Nine — Pushing Fast Engagement

Industry Nine took a different direction.

Its Hydra system became famous for extremely fast engagement, using a high number of engagement points to dramatically reduce the amount of crank rotation required before power reaches the rear wheel.

This can be particularly noticeable during technical climbing, ratcheting through rocks, or situations where riders repeatedly apply short bursts of power.

But engagement is also a good example of why hub design involves trade-offs.

More engagement points do not automatically make a hub better in every situation. Noise, complexity, drag, maintenance, load distribution, and even pedal kickback can all become part of the discussion.

The real engineering challenge is finding the right balance.

Chris King — Precision and Longevity

Chris King approaches hubs from yet another direction.

The brand is known for its distinctive RingDrive system, precision manufacturing, serviceable bearings, and products designed around long-term ownership.

Its hubs are expensive, but the appeal isn’t based purely on engagement numbers or weight.

Instead, Chris King has built much of its reputation around manufacturing quality, durability, and the idea that premium components should be maintained rather than regularly replaced.

This is an important lesson across the bicycle industry: specifications on paper only tell part of the story.

Shimano demonstrates the importance of system integration, while newer manufacturers continue exploring how hubs interact with modern mountain bikes.

For riders, the important question isn’t simply:

“Which hub has the best specifications?”

A better question is:

“Which design priorities actually matter for the way I ride?”

Engagement, durability, bearing quality, sealing, compatibility, maintenance, weight, and price all matter differently depending on the rider.

Understanding those differences makes choosing a hub much easier—and it is also what continues to push hub manufacturers, including KOOVA, to build better products.
